Pipeline (Ottawa's Kitimat) 2014, represented a plan by TransCanada Energy East to convert a 50-year old natural gas pipeline to carry toxic heavy bitumen across Canada.. The proposal was as contentious (at the time) as the pipeline debate in Kitimat, B.C. Many questioned how the pipeline would affect our community and environment.
The installation combines both geometric and organic shapes. Metal wire rods pierce hand-cut pieces of canvas painted in a variety of colours. Together the materials take the form of a long snake-like structure twisting and turning across the gallery space. As the eye slowly follows the structure the coloured organic shapes start to lose their vibrancy and change into different shades of greys ending in black. The work then ends with ‘oil’ spilling down the wall and onto the gallery floor creating a ‘puddle’.
